DM welcomes volunteers of all ages!

You don’t need to be a member of Difference Makers at TPMS or our DM Teen Ambassador to volunteer with us. Difference Makers has a number of volunteer opportunities that are available for children of all ages. Many of the organizations we partner with require a large number of handmade items that you can help us with. Those of you who are in middle and high school can earn SSL hours for your help.

Special Olympics Maryland – On-Going

Ongoing Opportunities for Elementary, Middle, High Schoolers, and Adults

Kokua Foods Monthly Canned Food Pickup

Help collect canned foods and other non-perishables from your neighbors for our food pantry at TPMS.  It’s easy.  Have them signup with their contact information and DM will provide them with a reusable bag that they can add their food to.   You will “adopt” these houses and do the pickups each month.  Your neighbors do not have to contribute each month to be part of this exciting program.

Help by crafting a pinata for Extra Ordinary Birthdays which serves children living in shelter a regular birthday experience. Difference Makers made and donated 50 of these last year and the need is growing.

Help by making a stuffie for Small Things Matter which encourages children to use their crafting talents to help those in need. Completed stuffies are donated to the Children’s Inn at NIH, Shady Grove Hospital, and other hospitals for their young patients. Instructions on making stuffies are here on their website: http://smallthingsmatter.org/index.php/projects/ If you can’t sew, but would like to craft stuffies for us please contact thesmallthingsmatter@yahoo.com

DM’s Kokua Foods Drivers

Help by volunteering to drive for our food recovery work with Wegmans Woodmore and Wegmans Germantown. Food pickups take place on Saturday and Sundays mornings and require a vehicle and a 2 hours time commitment.  We are rescuing 1000lbs of food each weekend and using it to run 3 distributions (Takoma Park Middle School, Rolling Terrace Elementary School, and Hampshire Tower Apartments) as well as donate to various DC area shelters including Shepherd’s Table, Prince George’s House, Stepping Stones Shelter, Carroll Men’s Shelter, and Grassroots.  See http://www.difference-makers.org/kokua-foods/ for more details.
